After four hours of Twitter suspension on Thursday, US President Donald Trump returned with a video on the microblogging site conceding defeat to President-elect Joe Biden. He addressed violence and said “a new administration” would be inaugurated on January 20, as legally scheduled. This leaves Donald Trump with around 300 hours as the US president. One wonders what Donald Trump would do with these 300 hours.

A New York Times report said Donald Trump was exploring possibility of him as the US president pardoning himself. Donald Trump fears his “enemies” would find out ways to prosecute him once he leaves the White House.

No American president has pardoned himself till date. So, even if Donald Trump grants himself clemency, his decision will be challenged in the US judiciary.

The incitement to violence on the Capitol Hill while a Congress session was underway turned public opinion in favour of fixing accountability of Donald Trump. It also led to suspension of his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Donald Trump lost two cabinet members soon after his call incited mob violence at the Capitol leaving four persons dead. First to resign was Elaine Chao, the transport secretary. Then, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos sent Donald Trump her resignation over the rampage by his supporters at the Capitol.

His support dwindled further within his own Republican Party with his support to the ochlocracy (the rule of mob) in the oldest constitutional democracy in continuity. He came very close to being impeached second time before he conceded defeat. Last time, he was acquitted by the Senate, where the Republican Party is in majority.

However, after the Capital Hill siege by Trump supporters, several Republican leaders were quoted as saying in the US media that they would not oppose the forced removal of the outgoing president. Some of the leaders even called for invoking the 25th Amendment Act that provides for ending the term prematurely.

However, Mike Pence, the US vice-president was said to be opposed to the idea. The law says the vice-president would take over the administration if the president is forced to vacate the office.

Impeachment of a US president can happen on the grounds of high crime and misdemeanour. During his four-year controversial stint, Donald Trump has faced several charges including seeking help from foreign powers in election, abuse of official position and also disloyalty to the US constitution in the end. He is accused by his critics of tax evasion.

Reports say that Donald Trump was not exploring the possibility of self-clemency but also of granting pre-emptive pardons to all his family members including his children Donald Trump Junior, Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner. All played some roles in the Donald Trump administration directly or indirectly.

Donald Trump’s tenure has been full of controversies. He was accused of obstruction of justice on a few occasions. In 2018, Donald Trump was named a conspirator in an illegal campaign finance scheme.

Donald Trump has more than a handful of reasons to believe that the Justice Department of the Joe Biden administration would investigate charges against him, and also that he might not get enough support in the Congress to block such a move. The flight of his cabinet members and the White House officials this week is a testimony of what Donald Trump is up against in his last days as the US president.

Besides the two cabinet secretaries, about half-a-dozen White House officials have either resigned or said they would leave the office earlier than the inauguration day. In plain speak, Donald Trump could be a lonely man when he leaves the White House.

Following the Capitol Hill violence and the certification of the US presidential election results by the Congress Donald Trump is left with no option but to agree to vacate the White House. It is just short of physical eviction of a disgraced US president — some 300 hours before his tenure would have peacefully ended.
