Former First Lady Melania Trump has spoken out against the FBI’s 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago, labelling it a violation of her privacy and issuing a broader caution to Americans.

The raid occurred during the FBI’s investigation into her husband, former President Donald Trump, over his alleged retention of classified documents, as reported by the New York Post.

In a video message, Melania described the incident as deeply intrusive, saying, “I never imagined my privacy would be invaded by the government here in America.”

She added, “The FBI raided my home in Florida and searched through my personal belongings,” underscoring her belief that this event should serve as “a warning to all Americans” and a reminder that “our freedom and rights must be respected.”

Leading up to the August 8, 2022 raid, authorities had been in discussions with Trump’s legal team to recover classified materials. In May 2022, the Justice Department issued a subpoena for these documents.

While officials collected material in June and a lawyer for Trump signed a letter affirming, to her knowledge, that the last of the classified documents had been handed over, authorities remained skeptical. This ultimately led to the raid, where they confiscated hundreds of pages marked as classified.

Donald Trump was later charged with 40 counts related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents and obstructing the investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Although US District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July, Smith’s team is reportedly working to revive it. Trump has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the Department of Justice, alleging political persecution.

The former president, who is still facing 14 counts across two indictments, has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump has largely remained out of the spotlight during her husband’s third run for the presidency, making few public appearances. However, her recent video messages mark a shift, including one in which she addressed a recent assassination attempt on her husband.

“The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience,” she said. “Now, the silence around it feels heavy… There is definitely more to the story and we need to uncover the truth.”
