The US Justice Department has hinted that it is not ruling out pressing charges against President Donald Trump for inciting the mob of his supporters who stormed the US Capitol, rioted through the corridors and vandalised property in a bid to stop Joe Biden’s confirmation as the next president.
According to the New York Times, US attorney in Washington told reporters, “We are looking at all actors, not only the people who went into the building”.
When asked if “all actors” would also include President Trump himself, who was seen giving provocative speeches just before his supporters invaded the US Capitol, Sherwin said, “We’re looking at all actors”, and added, “If the evidence fits the elements of a crime, they’re going to be charged.”
Even as the pro-Trump mob laid a siege on the Capitol building, Donald Trump tweeted out a video saying, "We love you. You're very special" and urged them to go home after they broke into the Capitol.
As calls seeking his impeachment grew louder over the latest attack on the US Capitol, Donald Trump took to condemning the violence and calling for peace.
Meanwhile, the Justice Department has filed 55 criminal cases over the US Capitol riots, Sherwin said, including some events pre-dating the latest attack on Thursday during a US Congress session.
The US Capitol Police said they had arrested 14 suspected of involvement in the rioting, most charged with unlawful entry, while the Metropolitan Police Department made at least 68 arrests.
Thousands of angry Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building on Thursday (IST) as the US Congress gathered to certify Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in the US election.
